Science Education in Terms of the Word Crisis

Abstract

Lately the word crisis has acquired enormous social relevance. Behind it a multi-dimensional crisis can be glimpsed, with emphasis on the socio-environmental, socio-cultural and socio-scientific dimensions. Accepting this diagnosis means that Science Education is confronted with the challenge of devising how to endow citizens with the resources that will enable them to build on the opportunities a downturn offers. We believe complexity is a solid proposal for tackling this challenge.

The article looks at the crises our world reflects and the contributions made as a result of complexity. It then offers certain views on the form a curriculum takes when understood from complexity. Finally it proposes certain exemplary changes with respect to the questions «What to teach?» and «How to teach?» that arise from rethinking Science Education from a complex viewpoint.
