Resumen

The aim of this article is to have a better understanding of the development and evolution of the concep of ion, up ro the present moment, since it was introduced by Faraday. We have focused our attention on Svante August Arrhenius, a very relevant scientist in the history of Chemistry, who made the most important progress in the investigation of the nature of ions, being the central figure in this field.
