Abstract

The use of open-ended questions to assess student knowledge on a particular subject is discussed. Metric characterists of those questions are analized in relation o their desirable characteristics for formative and summative evaluation. A procedure for rating open-ended questions using «concept maps» is described providing data on its content validity and reliability. Ways of using the procedure in formative evaluation are also described. As an application the procedure was used to analyze the reliability of Biology exercises (Universidad Autónoma Madrid Entrance Examinations).
